Which Are Backlinks?
Google and other significant search engines consider backlinks”votes” for a particular page. Pages with a high number of backlinks tend to have high organic search engine rankings.
What are backlinks?
For instance, here is a connection from Forbes to my site.
Since link points directly to a page on my website, it’s a”backlink”.
Backlinks are basically votes from other sites. Every one of these votes informs search engines:”This material is valuable, credible and useful”.
In reality, backlinks formed the base of Google’s original algorithm (called”PageRank”).
Even though Google has made thousands of changes to its own algorithm because then, backlinks stay a key ranking signal.
For instance, an industry study we conducted found that hyperlinks remain Google’s key ranking sign.

What Kinds of Backlinks are Valuable?
In other words, if you want to rank higher in the SERPs, concentrate on backlinks.

A single quality backlink could be stronger than 1,000 low-quality backlinks.

Trait #1: They Come Out Of Reputable, Authoritative Websites
Would you rather get a backlink from Harvard… or some random man’s site?
As it happens, Google feels the same way.
This concept is known as”Domain Authority”. Basically, the more power a site has, the more authority it could pass on to a site (via a link).
For instance, here is a link that I got from TechCrunch.
According to Ahrefs, TechCrunch is a very authoritative domainname.
Because that connection comes from an authority website, Google puts lots of weight onto it. Actually, I noticed a rise in my organic search engine traffic shortly after TechCrunch linked to me.
Are these links hard to get? Definitely.
Are they worth it? Absolutely.
What are anchor links?
In general, you want your links to possess anchor text that includes your target keyword.
In fact, a recent industry study found a correlation between keyword-rich anchor text and higher rankings for that keyword.
You don’t need to go overboard with keyword-rich anchor text.
Google Penguin filters out sites that use black hat link building strategies. And it specifically focuses on sites that build backlinks with exact game anchor text.
Trait #3: Your Website (and Page) Linking to You Is Topically Related To Your Site
When a website links to another website, Google wants to find that the 2 sites are related.
Picture you published an article about running a marathon.
In that case, Google will place considerably more burden on links from sites about marathons, running, fitness sites about fishing, unicycles, and electronic advertising.
Trait #4: The Link Is a”Dofollow” Link
Google and other search engines discount links with the”nofollow” tag attached to it.
(In other words, nofollow links don’t count search engine ranking algorithms).
Luckily, the huge majority of connections on the web are”dofollow” hyperlinks.
And the majority of the links that have the nofollow tag aren’t that valuable to begin with.
These links aren’t super helpful for SEO anyway, so it’s not a big deal that they’re nofollow.
Trait #5: The Link Can Be From a Domain Name That Hasn’t Linked to You Before
Let’s say you get a link from Website A.
Well, let’s say Website A links to you again. And again. And again.
Are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th connections as successful as the primary one?
As it happens, links from precisely the exact same site have decreasing returns.
Or put another way:
It is usually much better to receive 100 links from 100 different websites than 1,000 links in precisely the same website.
Actually our search engine rank correlation research found that the number of websites linking to you personally (not the total quantity of backlinks) connected with Google rankings over any other element.

Now that you’ve seen what kinds of backlinks would be the most helpful for your Google ranks, it is time for me to demonstrate how to begin building them.
Produce a Linkable Assets

A Linkable Asset could be a blog post, a video, a piece of software, a quiz, a survey… essentially anything that people are going to want to connect to.

And if your article is a fantastic fit for this individual’s roundup, you’ll get a high-quality connection.
(They may also share your content on social media)
Use The Moving Man Method
Here is the 3-step process:
First, you find web pages, tools or companies that are obsolete, rebranded or recently changed titles.
Afterward, find the websites that are still linking to these resources that are obsolete.
Eventually, you email visitors to let them know that they’re linking to something that is out of date.
